vCenter 4.0 Update 2

it is not possible for me to download any VMware Update at the moment. Thats bad, becaus i want to check the new VDR.

There is also a ESXi U2 available. Have you installed that yet?

I am only using ESX NOT ESXi.

Just updated my lab enviornment to U2 along with my ESXi hosts.

-Updated hosts first to U2

-Updated vCenter to U2

I dont believe there is a specified order that you need to update your environment in, but I didnt have a problem running older vCenter with new U2 hosts, I am sure that goes vice-versa.

I am going to run my lab on U2 for a few days then start to update production servers and production vcenter.

s1xth - Yes, the order does matter. You should upgrade you vCenter Server before your ESX(i) hosts. The reason is that you want/need for vCenter to be able to understand the newer ESX(i) builds before you upgrade the hosts.

I have upgraded both of my Dev ESXi to U2 (using Update manager from vCenter), vCenter still on U1 and all works fine it see new U2 Dev boxes fine.

BTW, is it possible to upgrade vCenter from vCenter Update manager or do i have to download the new install and run it?

Just mentioning a best practice in upgrading vCenter Server before ESX(i). This was the same process when upgrading from VI3 to vSphere4 in that vCenter should be upgraded first.

• Where is "Update Manager for vCenter Server"?<br>Why can't I configure it to download overnight and have it ready to quickly update it the next morning?

• If order matters, why does my vCenter Server/Update Manager "Pre-U2" offer U2 for installation on my hosts?

Thanks for the input....I am aware of the 'best practice' for upgrading, but just for other users to know, U1 vCenter DOES work fine with U2 hosts. I wouldnt run U1 vCenter for a long period of time with U2 hosts, but for a short period of time or if you were in a situation where you had to update a host before upgrading vCenter that it does work. I had no problems under vCenter U1 with U2 hosts in BOTH lab and production environment.

However, I did update my vCenter server last night, no issues with U1 hosts or with doing it in that order. I still have many other hosts to upgrade which will occur over the next few weeks.

@ - You need to download the full vCenter installation and run it. It will detect that it is an upgrade and run the correct processes to select the current DB. Make sure you select 'retain this database' and not create a new DB.

I have downloaded update 2. But I would like to read about it first. For some reason I can’t seem to find any documentation on it? I must be missing something. Normally there is a what’s new web page. I can’t seem to find it.

Installed the Vcenter U2 and I could no longer access the clients 3.5 ESX servers (VIA console screen). Forgot to write down the error message and revert back and everything worked just fine with U1

ooo, I got the same error after installing vSphere Client 4.0 Update 2! The error was something like "classfactory cannot supply requested class". My fix was to reinstall the VI Client for my ESX 3.5 servers. After that was done everything works again.

So you yook the old 3.5 client and reintalled over the top again. That sounds like it should work I remember having a simmlar issue with U1 and that was the fix also.
