vCenter 4.0.0 Build 258672 on x64 Hardware

Hi

Here is our situation.  We have our VC and SQL server running on the same physical server.  At present we are running on 4.0.0 update 2.  This server is now really struggling and we plan to move VC of the server and run on either a VM or other physical server.  We would wish this server to be x64 as we plan to upgrade to 4.1 in the next 6 months or so.  But we need to do this work now.  Rather than having to build the server OS more than once we would like to do the following:

x64 OS

VC 4.0.0 update 2

SQL server 2005 x32 ( existing server)

Does anyone know if this is supported config or will actually work?  We do not intend to create a new DB and will use the existing one.

Thanks

According to :

You need a 64 Bit Os for the VC, but your SQL can be 32 Bit.

If you are rebuilding your VC now - why not just go straight ahead to the latest version?

Also, running this on a VM is fully supported - and you can host the DB and VC on the same host without any issues.

One day I will virtualise myself . . .

No problems. Check best practices. http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1022104

To migrate database you can use a Data migration tool if necessary,

Hi thanks for the quick response.  However, not sure (unless I am missing something) this article relates to moving to 4.1.  Yes we want to do this but not right now.  We would like to install a new VC server running 4.0 update 2 on an x64 2008 server, point to the existing VC database install on SQL 2005 x32.

Thanks

Graeme
