Are there any issues running VCenter Server on the subject OS in a virtual machine?? Since I think vcenter server seems to be only 32 bit.

I can't say it will work or won't work, but it's not a compatible OS for vCenter. You may want to just go with 2008 Enterprise x64.

According to that document it is supported I see,

Table 15 under microsoft it is compatible if run in 32 bit compatibility on Windows Server 2008 R2 but not X64 hmmmmm..

I'm not sure I understand. W2K8 R2 is x64, and I don't see anywhere that it says its supported to run as a vCenter Host OS. Now, as a Guest OS if you have vCenter 4.0.0U1, then yes.

Maybe I'm missing something?

FYI, we have been running 6 linked vCenter servers (VMs) in 2008, ent, sp2, 64bit since Jan. Running well, but there are some gotchas.

1. If you run into problems be sure to include the server firewall in your troubleshooting steps. We saw numerous issues caused by the firewall (blocking tomcat to SQL server, blocking portions of display in vSphere client when viewing perf data, etc..).

2. Also, one big issue we ran into was that if you have linked mode and you remove the default local admin account that makes it's way into the VI client as admin during install, you will see problems that domain added admins cannot see other linked vCenter servers, only the one they hit initially. The fix was to add "authenticated users" to logon as batch job in secpol in the vCenter 2k8 OS.

FYI, we are using vCenter 4.0, update1. Not certain if our security policies altered some of our OS restrictions that may have caused these issues.

1. 2008 R2 is always 64 Bit. There is no 32 Bit version of R2!

2. 2008 R2 is not official supported until now.
