rescan hba bus after latest 3.0.1 patches loses console connectivity

i have dell 6850s. intel procs

qlogic hbas

connected to EMC cx700

i have updated to the latested esx 3.0.1 patches.

i presented a new lun to the storage group for esx.. then rescanned the HBA. however on 2 hosts i did this (with live vms on it) and the host went cold. i could access and see shell via the dell remote access card.

however couldn't ping the console port or any vms that had resided on the host.

HA kicked in and bought the servers back up on another host.. however i now have ghosting going on.. where the vms will show up as running on 2 hosts off and on. very odd.

i can resolve this by vmotioning all the vms manually to force them to stay on a host without any ghosting.

has anyone else seen any of this? i'm going to open a case with vmware on it

when you rescanned, did you do this from the Rescan link which brings up a dialog box with 2 checkboxes which were both ticked when you clicked ok? If so, this is known to cause a host to hang.

yes both were checked..

so you are saying it is best practice to do one at at time?

this is a known bug, I got stung by this one too so you're not alone. The workaround is to check only one box at a time.

See here for more information on this:
