"Favorite-Host" for a vm??

Hello,

is it possible to define a "favorite-host" for a vm with activated DRS/HA??

Means, i´ll stick a vm to a defined Host. There the vm will always run if it´s possible

(except maintenance, hardware-errors, etc. But if the Host is online again, the vm will automatically moved back to this host)

Thanks.

Marco

The only way to get that sort of functionality would be to set the per-VM DRS functionality level to "Manual" or "Disabled" on the VM. That way DRS will not automatically place or move the VM. HA will still restart the VM if it is running at the time of a HA event, but DRS will not touch it. You would then have to manually migrate the VM back to your preferred host.

We use DRS rules to dictate some basic VM placement. For instance, we have a large amount of Citrix servers and we want to keep them spread out amongst our Hosts in case of a host failure. Also virtualized domain controllers we keep seperated on different hosts to minimize impact due to a host failure. You should be able to create a rule that only allows a specific VM to run on a specific host. This would defeat the purpose of HA/DRS to keep your system running so I recommend you pick two hosts as favorites.
