I have been experiencing the same issue this morning, when trying to run the update download task i get the following error:

Web sites: https://xml.shavlik.com/unix hosting the patch

definitions and patches cannot be reached or has no patch

data. Check the internet connectivity.

I have tried visiting https://xml.shavlik.com/unix via a corporate and external ADSL connection, the website is not available.

I have raised a support ticket with vmware. I will let you know what they say.

I think this is about SSL trust root certificate problem.

I tried to import http://gtssl-aia.geotrust.com/gtssl.crt and install it as a root certificate then reboot vcenter, not working.

So I disabled unix and windows patch download for the moment (via patch download settings) 😕

From VMware Technical Support

Hello Gambit,

I have been doing further researh regarding this problem and this seems to be a known issue on Shavlik's side:

Our patch and security remediation content provider, Shavlik Technologies, is upgrading the availability of our patching data files which involves us transitioning to a new data source to retrieve the files. In early October, your systems downloaded the latest update of files which brought your patching needs up to date. When the next data update is pushed for the Linux distribution, the file will be generated and be found again making sure your patching needs are uninterrupted in the future. We've been in contact with Shavlik's management team and we are confident that in the next scan update on October 27th you will be receiving the latest updates again.

Please let me know if after tomorrow you are still experiencing this issue.

Best regards,

Arantxa Duque
