is Citrix a good candidate for virtualization?

Sorry if this is not the right place to ask this question.

I have ZERO knowledge of Citrix (exept that I know its kinda similar to Terminal Service) so I'm hoping some of you could shed some lights. We have a customer with 10 citrix servers and are considering VMware.

Its installed on top of Windows 2003. Is Citrix an intesive application? is it a good candidate for virtualization? thanks very much.

We have a Citrix farm of 12 Win2K3 servers running in VI3. No problems.

Yes.

On Citrix usually the disk are not critical.

But memory and CPU could be.

So verify how much user do you have and follow Citrix best practice for resource calculation.

In general Citrix is an ok candidate. Specially after vSpere has arrived. Vmware says that XenApp performance is up 30%

I beg to differ, a good disk subsystem is very important as the IO on a Citrix server is quite high. so you will need a decent amount of IOPS on your SAN

Yup, agree. We run around 70 Citrix servers on a combination of ESX and ESXi and all should be thought of when deploying the VM. Unlike many deploy and forget VMs that don't do much if anything, Citrix VM servers tend to have moderate to high utilization rates and take more consideration then most other VMs.

Yes it is. But keep in mind that the total amount of users you can host on a virtual citrix server is lower than on a physical server. (which makes sense cause you are using less resources virtually) also if you have the option look into AMD RVI or Intel EPT this will increase performance for your citrix vm.
