install Update 4 in V center 2.5

Hi All

I am about to install UPdate 4 on my Vcenter 2.5. wanted to check If I should be careful about something?

I will stop web service for new performance monitor and connect to existing database. I use sql express.

I read on one blog to let vcenter installation overwrite the existing database (when installation detects the existing DB) as it will upgrade the database but will it not overwite whatever I have in the database?

Do I need to recreate HA or current HA setup will be intact after installation?

how quick I need to update VM tools in VMs, can I take my own time has to be quick?

Thanks for your help

Aj

Assuming the upgrade goes well your HA settings will remain intact. And since vCenter is only required to actually setup HA and not for its operation, if you were to experience an ESX host outage during the time the vCenter server is being upgraded (and unavailable), HA would still kick in.

I performed the vCenter 2.5 Update 4 upgrade at multiple locations and haven't run into any problems. Be careful about letting the installation overwrite the current installation. You should be able to simply upgrade it by putting in the existing ODBC connection information during the installation. Selecting overwrite will probably result in you losing all of your current data.

I don't think there is any need to rush and upgrade the VMware Tools in your guests. You should definitely do it, but I wouldn't worry yourself about needing to schedule downtime immediately to get the tools updated. I would just do it the next time you need to apply Windows updates or other guest updates that require a reboot.

if you wanna keep your existing data, do not choose to overwrite the existing database during the installation.

The HA should be remained as it required after the upgrade.

To upgrade the vmtools, you may want to get a down time approved before you can do so as windows will require reboot and linux may require you to recompile the vmtools and kernel during the tools upgrade as usual.
