Hi
I have installed vc with sql 2005 express, now my vCenter server c:\ is almost full
is it possible to move my vCenter database to another drive
regards
Manic
It is really interesting.....!
Please try with GUI. Right Click the DB -> Tasks -> Detach -> Select "Drop Connections"
Then "Check" "Drop Connections" and click OK.

It is possible.
There are some workaround available. Pls refer KB:7960893.

Hi,
you can install a new server with more space and migrate the data as following.
But you can use also tolls like gparted or dell_expart to incrase your space.
MCP, VCP
thanks
will it affect my running VM's and ESX Server attached? any idea?
regards
Manic
It is not going to affect the running VMs and also ESX but you/VSC may see a disconnect for a while.

hi VJ
thanks for your quick response
Do you have any idea on how max DB size SQL 2005 express support for virtual center?
regards
Manic
It is actually 4 GB but you may want to try with couple of DB files if there is a requirement.
Wish to hear the result though..!

VJ
when I do detach db as given in the KB I received the following message
can not detach VIM_VCDB as it is currently in use
any help?

Aloha,
Related question. I have a 4 host ESX 3.5U4 system. My VCenter is pointing to an external SQL server. I am about to upgrade to vSphere and want to have the SQL running on on the VCenter server itself - most likely using SQL Express. I have the same concern about space. Is there a way to limit the size of the database???

A different approach would be to extend the c-drive.
We have recently released a tool (fatVM) to make this easy (or easier).
It creates the extended VM in a new directory (with the original as parent). Does not touch the original files. Is able to extend most VM in a couple of minutes.
Here is the link: http://www.gudgud.com/fatvm

You have only 4 ESX ,so it is good idea to use SQL Express as it is free it will support max 4 GB database size.
follow the steps in the following KB's
to detacch and attach database use steps given by vijay on the same discussion above
