data migration for 4.1 upgrade

I have a 32Bit Server 2003 V Centre install and i want to migrate to a new server with Server 2008R2

I was following the migration steps within the upgrade guide but the scrip fails

Could not back up vCenter Server data.

Could not back up VMware vCenter Update Manager data.

Build versions is 4.0.0.10021

I am tempted to just install from fresh and use the exisiting DB but i don't want to lose any config

school boy error - when it said the services needed to be stopped i thought it was informing me and stopping them not needing them to be stopped D'oh!
