I would like to create an alarm definition for when a virtual machine is deleted from the inventory but can't seem to find the appropriate definition for this. Can somebody help me out with this? It isn't a Virtual Machine monitor with a trigger of VM - Removed because that isn't firing an alarm. Thanks for the help.
Click on the "Alarm" tab of the object you like to have the alarm activated on (Organization, Cluster, Guest...).
Click "Definitions"
Right click into the right field and choose "New Alarm".
Definition:
Monitor: Virtual Machine and choose to "Monitor specific events..."
On the trigger tab add an Event and choose "VM removed".
The rest is up to you, how and when and what to do if the event occurs.

I did just exactly that as stated in my inquiry but it does not work. I created the alarm at the root of the vCenter hierarchy.
I have the same need but there is no solutionf or it.
Interesting, I recently upgraded to vCenter 4.1 and this type of alarm isn't available, anymore. I can't find it.

you must generate the alarm through the web client not from the vsphere client.
