[beginner] Move vCenter 4 to new datastore

Hi,

im Thomas and new to VMware products. However, i have to migrate serval VMs to a new datastore, including the vCenter VM.

This is a productive HA with around 100 plp working on it.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 4.1.0

VMware vSphere 4 Enterprise

HA Cluster

VMware DRS: On

VMware HA: On

VMotion

Hosts:

2x HP Proliant DL 380 G7 (each 2 ports FC HBA) (24 CPUs)

2x HP 8/8 SAN Switch

(s1) 1x HP P2000 G3 FC 4GBit Storage 22x 300GB 10k 2,5" HDD Dual Controller 4 Paths (2 LUNs each 1,77 TB)

(s2) 1x HP P2000 G3 FC/iSCSI 8Gbit Storage 12x 1TB 3,5" HDD Dual Controller 2 Paths (3 LUNs, each 1,77 TB)

All hosts can access all datastores.

Status

I have successfully migrated all customer VMs from (s1) to (s2).

There is one VM left to migrate: the vCenter VM.

After searching i found this Vmware KB:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=100462...

Question

Do i have to migrate the vCenter to the (s2), like explained in the VMware KB or am i able to migrate it using the vSphere Client?

If you need more details, let my know.

Regards,

Thomas W.

Answer:

Just migrate the vCenter VM like the others. Completed in 4:30 min and VM was responsive whole time Smiley Happy. No warnings or errors occoured.

Before i started the migration, i checked if "Host isolation response" was set to: "Leave powered on" in HA settings.

Weekend saved :smileycool:
