  • 1.  backup Linux guests with VCB

    Posted Sep 11, 2007 05:37 AM

latest vcb, vc, esx3 and trying consolidated backup for the first time on VI3, i noticed with the latest vmtools win2k/win2k3 guests are OK but linux won't backup, it would put the guest in snaphsot then come with this error:

    \[2007-09-11 13:57:59.471 'BaseLibs' 5608 warning] \[Vmdb_Unset] Unsetting unknown

    path: /vmomi/

    \[2007-09-11 13:58:00.346 'BlockList' 5004 error] System error.

\[2007-09-11 13:58:00.362 'vcbMounter' 5004 error] Error: Failed to open the disk

    : Unspecified error

\[2007-09-11 13:58:00.362 'vcbMounter' 5004 error] An error occurred, cleaning up

    ...

    C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Consolidated Backup Framework>

    then commit the redo log

    i issued the standard command inc -h -u -p

    works OK with win2k/win2k3 guests

    HBA's are qla450c

The linux guests are debian, rh, etc.

Anyone came across this and found a solution ?

    anyone ?

the logs are useless with this, it's working with some but not others and there is no difference between the vm's were setup except the content that's inside them

are you trying to do file level or image level backup? I don't think it will do the file level; however not sure if it will do image level or not. I will have to try it and let you know...

Can you post your pre-command string or vcbmounter string?

As TravisT mentioned above, VCB does not support file-level backups of Linux guests, only Windows guests.

    not file level, complete vm

still not working and nonthing in the logs, not even something "cryptic", i'll re-install ESX 3.0.2 and try again

There's more logging information in your %temp% directory (usually C:\windows\temp\1).

Are you using VCB for ESX 3.0.2, VC 2.0.2?

Plenty of troubleshooting we can do before you reinstall ESX :smileyhappy:
