What is the meaning of VirtualMachineToolsVersionStatus.guestToolsUnmanaged

The description says "VMware Tools is installed, but it is not managed by VMWare." When exactly can this happen and is there anything that can be done so they are managed by VMWare?

The resolution states that "this is an expected behaviour when using operating system specific packages (OSP) to install VMware Tools on guest virtual machines".
