Hello, I've searched the forums but can't find any other posts that have an answer for this..

I'm installing a new vCenter 5 on a fresh Windows 2008 R2 sp1,  SQL 2008 R2 sp2 box.

I'm working my way thru the file "DB_and_schema_creation_scripts_MSSQL.txt"

I ran the "VCDB_mssql.SQL file in Server manager and got this output.

I just tried again with the latest vcenter ISO and same issue.

You should not have to do anything with these scripts.  If you have an existing SQL DB, configure you ODBC settings and specify that SQL DB in the install of vCenter.  The installer will do what needs to happen.  Just ensure you have dbo on the MSDB(to create rollup jobs) and the VCDB.

If you have using the embedded SQL 2008 R2 express, the installer will also create all the necessary "stuff".  Just choose "create new DB" or something to that effect.

Thanks for helping Troy, but that gets me back to the same issue I had when i started which made me start using the scripts.

First, I'm using the full install of SQL 2008 R2.

When I run the install for vCenter (u1a now), right after picking my ODBC link from the drop down, clicking "Next" on the "Database options" page.... where is says "DSN is setup to use integrated windows authentication............."

I get this box.

VMware vCenter Server

The specified ODBC system DSN currently points to the SQL

Server 'master' database.  This is a special system database that

can not be used for user applications.  Please ensure that you

have created a new database for vCenter Server and that is is

configured as the default database for this DSN.

This appears that we are supposed to "PRE" make a database, have I missed this in one of my documents that I'm following?

Are you using 64bit windows and SQL?  vCenter requires a 32-bit DSN so check this thread:  http://communities.vmware.com/message/2003103

Yes, the DB needs to be created and proper permissions need to be setup prior to connecting to it.

Thanks to both of you guys.   That was it, I was following  vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-50-installation-setup-guide.pdf it to do this.

I went back and edited my ODBC (64 and 32) to point the the database that I manually created <and pointed to this time> with sripts from (DB_and_schema_creation_scripts_MSSQL.txt).  I stopped running the scripts at page 181 and it seems to be working now.

(Optional) Use a Script to Create Microsoft SQL Server Database Objects Manually

This is the step that i didn't do (caused this 900 bytes error every time).

4 Run the scripts in sequence on the database.

The DBO user must own the objects created by these scripts. Open the scripts one at a time in Microsoft

SQL Server Management Studio and press F5 to execute each script in the order shown here.

VCDB_mssql.SQL

There are tons of these SQL statmants to load and run.

I'm just following the GUI install now and it appears to be working fine.

Only issue was that I had port 80 blocked (Reporting Services for SQL 2008 R2).  I guess it installed that by default.

If I find anything else,I'll post back to help others.

I've already installed update manager and sys log server, as well as finished a test "standalone converter" from my 4.1 environment to my 5.x one.

I'm big on automatting, and there are tons of holes that have to be poked thru the fire wall.

Maybe this will benefit others.. This is a batch file that I created to open ports.
