Vmware Tools: out of date

Hi,

I see that, most of my VMs started showing that their VMware Tools status as 'out of date' all of a sudden. We have upgraded the Virtual Center Server to 2.0.2 Build 50618 pretty long back but didn't see this behavior. Is it that everytime we upgrade the VC Server we need to install Vmware tools on all the VMs?

Could someone help me to understand this?

Thanks

Did you upgrade the ESX hosts too?

Most ESX/VC upgrades do require a VM tools upgrade too, although there's no problem with running them 'out of date' until you have a conveniant window for the reboot (of Windows machines, Linux doesn't require one to upgrade the tools).

fyi, if you are running esx 3.0.1 you probably need patches 5095559 and 6704314 applied to avoid a weird memory leak issues with the vmtools service (in Windows). Support says this is fixed in 3.0.2 update 1 and also v3.5.

The downside is that no matter how you do it you need to reboot the guests after updating the tools Smiley Sad
