Vitual Center does not start - "a connection failure occurred"

on 4/10 we copied the Virtual Center database to a real SQL server & modified the ODBC connection to point to it. We did not copy the VM Update Manager database (we're going to do it later). We noticed that long term performance data stopped being collected. Now we cannot launch Virtual Center - we get "a connection failure occurred"

Can anybody tell us what things we should be looking at to troubleshoot? Any help would be appreciated.

More info: it is Virtual Center 2.5 on a VM Guest and that is where the license server is located

the Virtual Center database was moved to a W2K3 X64 Ent. Edition R2 SP2 with MS SQL 2005
