VirtualCenter Server service fails to start on bootup

I have a machine running Win2k3 with SP2 that has a clean installation of VirtualCenter 2.5 on it. I'm using the included MSSQL 2005 Express for my database (only 3 ESX servers).

When I reboot the VirtualCenter server, I get an error about a service failing to start. The event log shows two errors; one in System (the Vmware VirtualCenter server service terminated with service specific error 2) and one in Application (Description for Event id 1000 cannot be found....Failed to initialize Vmware Virtual Center. Shutting down...)

However, if I then start the VirtualCenter Server service, it starts up and runs fine. Per some information in other posts, I made the vpxd service depend on the SQL server service, but no change.

Other ideas?

As far as I can see, the database is coming up just fine. And the VirtualCenter server service starts up fine after login.

there are a couple of logs you can look for clues.

here is a link to a very nice document for troubleshooting VC and ESX issues:

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=2&url=http%3A%2F%2Fdownload3.vmware.com%2Fvmworld%2F2006%2F...

have a look at the VC wont start section.

hope it helps

I was having the same problem, but the SQL Server dependancy worked for me:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\vpxd

ProtectedStorage

lanmanworkstation

MSSQL$SQLEXP_VIM <--ADDED

p.s. check that "MSSQL$SQLEXP_VIM" is exactly what you need - it should be listed in the same area in regedit under Services.
