VirtualCenter Server VM "dies" after running Update Scan

Running v3.5i on 2 HP 380 G5's with VC 2.5 as a VM.

If I scan the VC to check for patches the VC server will lose connectivity (no ping, no VIC connection).

If I connect to the associated host with the VIC I can see the VM running, but the perf stats are flatline at 0 and when clicking on the Console tab an error says "There is no process running for config file /vmfs/volumes/......../server.vmx

If I try to Power Off the VM it hangs at 95%. I have only been able to correct this by rebooting the associated host.

Any thoughts?
