Virtual Center in guest or Domain Controller in guest.

Okay, so I have to split my Virtual Center Server/Domain controller which is our only physical server. So I have three choices.

1. Buy anyther physical server

2. Run all Domain Controllers as VMs

3. Move my VC server to a guest OS.

What is the recommended configuration from vmware?

What would you do and why?

What have you done and how is it working?

I suggest this way.

2. Run all Domain Controllers as VMs

Is it possible, but be sure to set a DRS antiaffinity rule to keep the VMs separated.

What about running it on workstation hardware rather than server hardware. Is there a hardware compatability document for just VC?

I suggest to use ESX or ESXi for your production VMs.

And also server hardware both for HCL and for stability.

If you run your VC under the same VMware Cluster you can benefit, for example, of VMware HA.

Just talking about Virtual Center here. We have two HP DL585's running ESX and then an HP DL380 that is running one of our Domain Controllers and our Virtual Center server. The two ESX servers share a (Dell) Equallogic PS100E San.

My question is, can we just move the Virtual Center server to a high end workstation and keep it on hardware rather than running it in a VM. From the OS compatability, it looks like that is an option.

The other option I have for a location is our backup server. On that server we are running Commvault Simpana 8.0 for backups. We also run vRanger Pro on that server. We do not run VCB any longer as we opted for VRanger rather than VCB.

Thanks

Yes is possible. Just be sure to meet the minimum requirements.
