VMtools old

I have 3 out of 174 VM's that show as VM tools Old. i tried reinstalling via VC run vmtools install from a network share. The servers will not upgrade to the latest version. i have verified that all of the hosts are on the same build. I have tried vmotioning the vm's to different host and get same results. I also verfied the tools build on the VM and it is an old build so it's not a VC display issue.

Any suggestions?

What version of ESX? I assume that the 3 VMs are of the same type as the other 170+? (ie nothing unique about them)

Are these VMs upgraded from 2.5 VMs? What do you have for config and hardware version in the VMX file (8 and 4 for 3.x). You say they will not upgrade. What happens? Do you get an error?

The host are on version 3.02 build 63195.

The vm's were not upgraded, they were built on version 3.02.

When I reinstall the tools, it goes as normal and I reboot and it still shows as the old version

These 3 vm's are windows 2003 servers.

About the only way to resolve this is to do this:

Uninstall VM Tools. Delete the VM Tools folder. Uninstall the Network driver in the guest. Reboot the guest.

Reinstall the Tools.

Some services are stubborn, and if VM Tools sees the files are in use, it ingores them, and thus they don't get updated.
