The HA and DRS are enabled on the cluster. There are 2 identical host servers with VMotion enable. The VLAN network is in place. When trying to run VMotion, the servers are found to be incompatible (and VMotion won't run) as moving the CDROM/dev and TTY(serial)/dev is not the same or is not supported.
Any thoughts as to why serial ports and CDROM devices won't migrate?
Since the CD-ROM and serial device are on the local ESX host, they won't be accessible when the VM is migrated to the second ESX host. Therefore, VMotion fails.
Just disconnected the CD-ROM device when not in use (always a good practice anyway to maximize the available resources).
What is the serial port being used for? If you want to VMotion the server, you'll have to disconnect it as well.

Yes, that did it! Good call.
Todd,
As virtualdud2 correctly states, VMotion isn't meant to operate with (local) floppy and CD-ROMs connected. Edit Setting of the guest you're attempting to migrate and select the floppy and CD-ROM device in turn and ensure they are not connected - if they are, uncheck both the tick boxes in Device Status.
Lastly, it is considered best practice to ensure all floppy and CD-ROMs are disconnected after use for both efficiency and VMotion purposes.
