Hi, I have a cluster with one HP DL785 G5 and two HP DL 585 G5. The DL785 is an AMD Opteron Quad Core, the two DL585 are AMD Opteron Dual Core. When I try to migrate a VM from one DL585 to the DL785 apeears the following error:
"Unable to migrate from "source host" to "destination host": Host CPU is incompatible with the virtual machine's requirements at CPUID level 0x0000001 register 'ecx'.
host bits: 0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0111:1111:1111
required: 0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:000x:1xxx
Refer to KB article 1993 for possible solutions."
The 1993 article didn't help me.
Do you have any suggestion ??
There should be no problem going between dual and quead core as long as the Opteron chips are compatible - what model ships are you running?

the first DL585G5 is an amd opteron dual core 8220SE
the second DL585G5 is an amd opteron dual core 8222SE
the DL785G5 is an amd opteron quad core 8360SE
Dual and quad core is not the porblem.
I am not sure what masking you can do here. I do not like masking cpu bits to get vmotion to work.
What you may want to do is put these system into a evc cluster. They are close enough in family
so that to me is the best option.
When we used masking in the past you start to run into issues when you patch or do upgraded where your masking breaks
seeing that the patches expose bits on newer cpu's.
