VMotion - I'm getting frustrated

hey folks

I have 2 identical Dell 2850's

ESX latest build and patched to current.

VMKernal nic on server A is 192.168.10.20 and 192.168.10.21 on server B

VMotion is ticked on the VMKernal properties on both servers.

I do not see the other server from VI Client no matter which server I am connected to. When I open the VIC I have no datacenters listed, just the single server.

I am using a trial license which allegedly supports the use of VMotion.

Both ESX servers are configured exactly the same, however,on server A I see the options to migrate hosts etc, but on server B these options are not listed.

Any pointers as to what to check.

Thanks

Steve

You have to create a datacenter yourself.

right click hosts and clusters and ... new datcenter

then add other host

then but them both in the same data center

Yes I know that from rtm

I do not have the option to create a datacenter

No hosts and clusters options.

the root entry in the VIC is the ESX Server.

License type -

ESX Server Standard

iSCSI Usage

SAN usage

Up to 4 way virtual SMP

NAS Usage

ADD ONS

VMWare Consolodated Backup - licensed for 2 cpu's

This should include all production-orientated features...so it says

Are you connecting your VI client to the ESX host or the VC server? It sounds as though you are connecting to the ESX hosts directly instead of pointing your VI client at the VC.

Are you sure you've installed Virtual Center and not just only VIC?

Ha, correct.

I do not have Virtual Center installed.

Silly question now.

How do I install. I have a folder on that has virtual center files, but the look like unix files....and there's a readme that says it's an upgrade to CC 1.2

The server service starts, then after the first attempt to connect, it stops. No errors are logged.

Try Just the regular VI client to connect, that way you don't have to worry about web stuff. Just load it onto any workstation.
