VMotion Compability across different chipset families.

Hi,

I read in Update 2 they provided VMotion compatibility across the board. I wondered if there were any gotchas included with this or if it worked without problem.

I have a client wanting to add another ESX server to their farm but it will most definitely have a newer processor and I want to make sure that they will be able to use VMotion between this new server and the older servers. If not, I will probably have them purchase two identical servers and put them in their own HA cluster.

Thanks in advance.

As long as it's Intel to Intel or AMD to AMD and they have the same VT extension support, you shouldn't have a problem.

The idea to make the servers identical is a better idea, however.

The new thing in U2 is the EVC that enables Vmotion between different CPU families.
