is this different from using Veeam backup to backup the servers?

Hello.

VMware Data Recovery is a backup solution from VMware. It is similar to other 3rd party backup solutions, but it is also limited in more ways than these same 3rd party solutions. You can much more information at the product site.

yes, quite. Although vDR has some good points, if comparing to Veeam, there really isn't much comparison

Hi,

VMware Data Recovery (vDR) is a virtual appliance which allows to make backups of virtual machines using de-duplication techniques. This backups are made over disks and it's not possible to make backups over tape using vDR.
