VMTools - preferred method to install (RDP or vSphere Client Console access)?

Hi all,

We have autorun disabled for CDs (by group policy). So we have to start install from the vSphere Client and then log into the VM and open the CD to run the VMtools executable. One system admin was trying to do this via RDP and would get dropped during the install. Another has been doing this via accessing the console from vSphere client and hasn't had a problem. Should there be a difference between the two access methods to get the VMtools installed?

Thanks.

Hello.

Should there be a difference between the two access methods to get the VMtools installed?

When the VMware Tools are installed, the network drivers are most likely getting updated and causing the RDP connection to drop. In most cases, the connection should resume but this is not always the case. By using the vSphere client, you can completely avoid this inconvenience.

Good Luck!

And I can tell you from experience RDP upgrade is a BAD idea.. if the connection drops, sometimes the TS will reset, and you have to login again as a new session, losing previous progress, which means starting the VM tools install over.. So BEST method is via VM console like vmroyal said.

vsphere client. When the nic driver updates you temporarily loose network access for a brief second RDP will drop
