VCSA 6.5 smtp alert not using authentication settings

Hi,

I reconfigured our 6.5 appliance SMTP settings to add authentication (user name, port and password under advanced settings) and triggered an alarm. The mail is bounced back to root with Diagnostic-Code: SMTP; 530 5.7.0 Authentication required from the mail server. How do you force vcenter to use the authentication settings? Mail service and entire appliance have been restarted with no change.
