VC Recovery Plan

I am looking at a backup plan for VC and License Server both of which are on the same physical server. I know that rebuilding it isnt the worst thing in the world but would like to make recovery as easy as possible. What items besides the VC SQL database should be backed up?

I would be interested in hearing what others users backup plans are.

Hi,

I have my VC boot from SAN and its replicated out to my DR site.

If you want to restore, make sure you have a full OS including system state backed up.

Then backup all the drives (if you have any extra).

Most importantly for ease of restore make sure that you actually have a backup of your VC database.

If you use MS SQL you need your backup solution to have an SQL agent or use the dump to flat file method and then back that up.

Also remeber to get backups of your System DB's( master etc) you can restore without them but its a pain if you don't understand MS SQL .

The most important thing is the database, followed by the lic file. One thing you can do is install VC on a VM (Shut down the physical first) and attach it to the existing database. Make sure you do not initialize the database during the install and of course, the DB needs to be on a separate server. Then just shut the VM down and use it like a hot-spare.

I really like that idea. I prefer to do the work ahead of time instead of 3am over RDP.

Aloha - In our case, the database is stored on a separate SQL server which is backed up nightly. Also whenever a change is made to the VC server itself, I use Acronis to image it.

...to add a little more to what Dave said, you could also do a P2V of your physical server.
