VC 2.0.2 and SQL2005

What is the ramification to running VC 2.0.2 build 50618 and SQL2005 without SP2? what does the upgrade to SP2 fix? If the dba applies SP2 to SQl 2005, is there anything I need to do for VC?

Thanks

It runs under SP1 or SP2, see this: http://kb.vmware.com/kb/6565318

Just shutdown VC when upgrading, there is nothing you will need to do after upgrading it.

To add to this:

VC 2.0.1 supports SQL 2005 SP1 only as per the release notes: http://www.vmware.com/support/vi3/doc/releasenotes_esx301_vc201.html

NEW: Support for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (SP1 only) as a database for VirtualCenter. See Requirements for Running VirtualCenter with MS SQL 2005 (KB 6565318) for information on using this database with VirtualCenter.

VC 2.0.2 supports SQL 2005 SP1 or SP2 as per the release notes: http://vmware.com/support/vi3/doc/releasenotes_vc202.html

Newly Supported Database for VirtualCenter 2.0.2 Release

VirtualCenter Server 2.0.2 release adds support for these additional database management systems:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 SP2 (both 32 bit and 64 bit)

Note: The Microsoft SQL Server 2005 native client driver is not supported for installation or upgrade. You must use the SQL Server driver (not the native SQL or other drivers). If you are using Microsoft SQL Server 2005, verify that the ODBC driver configured for the database is the SQL Server driver. If not, you must reconfigure the SQL Server driver prior to attempting to upgrade or install this update. Otherwise, the installation will not succeed.

The release note states "VMware has tested and certified Microsoft SQL Server 2005 SP1 for use with VirtualCenter Server 2.0.1 and SQL Server 2005 SP2 (32- and 64-bit) for use with VirtualCenter 2.0.2. "

The way I read it they are saying that VMware has tested and certified Microsoft SQL Server 2005 SP1 for use with VirtualCenter Server 2.0.1

and

SQL Server 2005 SP2 (32- and 64-bit) for use with VirtualCenter 2.0.2.

Is that correct?

It's not entirely specific but the release notes for 2.0.2 says:

> VirtualCenter Server 2.0.2 release adds support for these additional database management systems: * Microsoft SQL Server 2005 SP2 (both 32 bit and 64 bit)

Since it previously supported SP1 you could take that to mean they added support for SP2 to 2.0.2 so it supports SP1 or SP2.
