Yes it can...

SQL 2005 support - http://kb.vmware.com/kb/6565318

Newly Supported Database for VirtualCenter 2.0.2 Release

VirtualCenter Server 2.0.2 release adds support for these additional database management systems:

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 SP2 (both 32 bit and 64 bit)

Note that the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 native client driver is not supported for installation or upgrade. You must use the SQL Server driver (not the native SQL or other drivers). If you are using Microsoft SQL Server 2005, verify that the ODBC driver configured for the database is the SQL Server driver. If it is not, you must reconfigure the SQL Server driver prior to attempting to upgrade or install this update. Otherwise, the installation will not succeed.

Tried to migrate from Enterprise Level MSSQL to standard. Got an error related to password decryption - failed to decrypt password. VC failed to connect to any ESX host. Be prepared.

Returned to the Enterprise level

I can't believe that this error belongs to MS SQL Express / Standard / Enterprise.

Did u installed a fresh VC 2.0.2 on the MSSQL Standard or did u exported the VC data from your Enterprise MSSQL into the Standard MSSQL?

Error: \[VpxdCert] Failed to decrypt password: applying private key to encrypted data failed (likely the wrong key)

I solved the mystery about DB&VC migration. Migration Virtual Center from one host to another requires not only DB Backup&Restore , but also the original certificates from the original host (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\SSL\rui.*).
