Using StorServer with VCB with TSM to backup VM's, having a problem with one VM - snapshots

ESX Version 3.0.2, Virtual Infrastructure Server & Client V2.0.2, VCB installed on Windows 2003 proxy Server with StorServer installed. All my Virtual Machines are doing incrementals using tivoli storage manager with no problems except for one.

Last evening after it ran an incremental it shut off. In viewing the datastores for this VM there are approximately 30 .vmdk files with numbers associated with them. The datastore files for this VM have the .vmx, vmdk, vmxf files. Also in viewing the Event log on this particular VM I see where it goes through creating snapshot, releasing and removing, however I also see it doing 'Map Disk Region'. There are quite a few of these listed in the Event log. I figure that's why it finally powered off. When we attempted to power on the VM we got a message about 'cannot open the disk '/vmfs/volumes/series of numbers/letters. We removed the two hard drives and added them back in and were able to power back the VM

Do you have any idea what the 'Map Disk Region' is from? and how do you remove the series of snapshots that weren't properly released at the time of running the incrementals.

All the other VM's are fine.

First...Welcome to the forums!

Can you post the vcb logs, which are usually located under your %TEMP% directory on the proxy - normally c:\windows\temp. Also post the log from the VM, this should be in the same location as the .vmx file. You may want to add the option to delete existing snapshots in your config.js as well.

You did not mention the version of VCB. Hopefulle, you are running 1.5.....

I ran an incremental again this morning and I've attached the log file. We're running ESX V 3.0.2 - planning to upgrade soon. So unfortunately the VCB that came with this is version 1.0.3.

When I ran the incremental again this morning it was successful, however the VM didn't power back on, I was able to manually restart it. In reviewing the Task/Events I see when it attempts to 1) remove snapshot there is an error ‘'doing an online commit, cannot power off, followed by 2) Remove snapshot - The request refers to an object that no longer exists or has never existed, 3) Power on virtual machine - cannot open the disk ‘/vmfs/volumes/SID...I see it's attempting to open one of the )

The second thing we did was go into datastores and delete all the versions with numeric #'s .vmdk (pacific-000003.vmdk.

I'm not going to do another incremental until Monday since I'm leaving shortly.

Post the logs in the VM's directory as well. You can use winscp to copy them.

I have a suspicion that this has something to do with VMware Tools inside the VM, since it does not occur on other VMs, that is why I would like to see the logs from the VM. In the mean time, you can try completely uninstalling VMware Tools, reboot, install VMware Tools again - use the COMPLETE option, not typical, reboot, and then run the installer again, select modify and make sure the sync and vss drivers are installed.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will give it a try. It may be a few days since this VM is in semi-production.
