Upgrading to vCenter 5.1 - vCenter Inventory Service Failure

Hi All,

I know that we have many questions already regarding upgrading vCenter, but I did not see here yet this one.

I am trying to upgrade the vCenter and my vCenter Inventory Service keeps failing to upgrade. I always get:

"The wizard was interrupted before VMware vCenter inventory Service could be completed installed.
Your system has not been modified. To complete installation at another time, please run the setup again"

I see also in the logs this:

CustomAction VM_UninstallInventoryService50 returned actual error code 1603 (note this may not be 100% accurate if translation happened inside sandbox)
Action ended 02:22:30: VM_UninstallInventoryService50. Return value 3.

I did not get any issues with the install SSO(until now), only when I try to upgrade vCenter Inventory.
I have try everything, rollback, restores, uninstall SSO etc., even replace the SSL, but nothing works. Somehow the Inventory just not install/upgrade, don’t know why.

I am trying Simple Install
This vCenter is on a VM and is Windows 2008 R2 and SQL 2008 R2

Anyone have this issues and fixed?

Any help??

PS: I don’t know how VMware launch an upgrade with so many changes and with so many problems that most of the costumers are complaining.

Thank You

NW

I read somewhere that someone was having issues like you because the account used for the vCenter services was the local account instead of a domain account ...

Did you try changing that?

[edit] found the link: http://www.virtualization.net/3930-vmware-vcenter-5-installation-fails-error-code-1603/

It's for vCenter 5, but worth looking into all the same I think.

Hi

Thank You for your reply.

In that link the issue is not the same, but I will give it a try.

Thanks

Hi ...

In your case I think it's another issue ...

I see these two entries in your log:

MSI (s) (CC:24) [17:39:11:047]: Warning: Local cached package 'C:\Windows\Installer\13121f.msi' is missing.

MSI (s) (CC:24) [17:39:11:047]: SOURCEMGMT: Source is invalid due to missing/inaccessible package.

Maybe need to look into this?

Haven't seen that error before though ...

hmm I mounted the vcenter installation iso with MagicDisc as a disk.

The iso is mountable und should be fine?

I did not delete any temporary data while installing.

Any Ideas?

Thanks, Patrick

Maybe try copying the ISO content locally to your HDD and run it from there?

Hi All

I did not test the solution since I open a support ticked in VMware and I was advice not to upgrade any vCenter or Hosts at this time in production environments.

So when I have the time I will test this, but for new we will not upgrade our VMware farm.

I just had this same issue trying to upgrade from 5.0 to 5.1 and found an error burried in one of the uninstall logs that it couldn't find the installer for the previous version of the Inventory service. I had deleted my install files for 5.0 after installing 5.0. I copied the 5.0 files into the location they were in when I did the install originally and that fixed the error upgrading to 5.1. Try that. The log I found the error in was located at C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Temp\2. Name of the log file is vim-is-uninstall.log. The log will also tell you where it's looking for the file so you know where to copy your old install files too.

i know, its too late, but someone can need that > you have to mount iso image with older vcenter instalation(5.0), cause instalator of new version(5.1) need it for uninstall old part of vcenter.
