Upgrading VMware Tools

Hi,

I know upgrading VMware Tools will require downtime on Windows OS, I need to know if this is the case for Linux OS as well. I am pretty sure it is, but just wondering if there is a way to avoid downtime. Thanks.

It's my experience that the downtime is very minimal moving between incremental versions, usually a network disconnect for a minute or two for supported Linux versions and using the automated option.  Also, there is an option to upgrade tools on a power cycle (below).  It is adviseable to always perform tools upgrades during a maintenance cycle, however, the impact should be fairly low if you want to perform an upgrade during production hours.  Be sure your applications and users can handle the short network outage.  These comments also presumes that you are moving between releases without skipping some.  You want to always be certain that your machine version is upgraded and that your Linux distribution and version are supported by VMware.  http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?deviceCategory=software

I do not see an issue if you want to postpone a reboot after the update, but be sure to do it as soon as you can.

Also take note during the update the network services maybe restarted causing a slight network outage.
