We have just had our virtual centre server installed with update manager on a 10GB partition, already we are down to 3.5GB of free space and update manager logs a message every 5 minutes stating that is running out of storage space.
It has been installed using SQL Express edition so the questions are:
a) just using update manager for VMWare updates will this suffice?
b) can we supress the message?
c) Can we uninstall and re-install update manager and SQL Express (cleanly) after we have presented a larger disk? (its a virtual machine)
Regards
Hi,
I will answer those questions that I am able to, maybe somebody else can clarify the points I am unsure of...
a) Just doing the ESX updates will definately reduce the space required for patches. However I would say this is a short term fix.
b) I don't know if you can disable the message in the log... Edit: However if you move the Update Repositary the alerts should stop
c) If you reinstall Update Manager, selecting custom, you will be able to change the Update Manager Repositary location. By default this is Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware Update Manager. So you could move the Update Manager repositary to your new virtual disk.

Thanks, I'll unistall and re-install with a custom installation.
Cheers
Hello,
I have unistalled and reinstalled to a new location without any issues. It will just download the updates to the new locale and repop the DB.
Hi,
I think, there isn't necessary a reinstall. Try to edit C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\Update Manager\vci-integrity.xml
There is a section with <path>:
<docRootHostUpdates>
<namespace>/vci/hostupdates</namespace>
<path>D:\VMware\VMware Update Manager\Data\</path>
</docRootHostUpdates>
Move downloaded patch files from original place to the new one. Make backup copy from original .xml
Edit from original path to new path, save .xml file and restart VMware Update Manager Service.
What about it?
Hi,
You can also change the event trigger by modifing the following line within vci-integrity.xml
Currently this is set to warn when you have 5gb of space left on your update disk.
I have changed this to 2gb (2000000000) which personally I think is fine.
Dont forget to restart the VMWare Update Manager Service after saving your change to the .xml
Hope this gives another another route for supressing the message untill disk space really does becomae an issue!
