Update Manager Issues

I updated my VC to 2.5 Update 2. My Hsosts are still at builds: 64607, 70356 and 82663. I am experiancing the following issues and I am not sure if it is due to the HOSTS not being at the 110268 build version:

1. Update Signiture task hangs at 60%...

2. When trying to Download and Install the Update Manager Extension Version 1.0.0.63972 Plug-In I recieve the following error: "The Remote Server returned an error: (501) Not Implimented

Help????

Thanks -

Sean

How frequent do you run the schedule update for your Update Manager to gather the latest patch from official site?

Btw, you can try to re-install the Update manager without destroy the Database. This will only take you couple of minutes. Before doing that,I did experience with restarting the services and the update manager back to normal. Just you may need to try around the solution which it may work for you. If you running on VC 2.5 Update 2, I bet it should be better.

Hi -

I am running update 2 (VMWare Virtual Center Version 2.5.0 Build 104215) on the VC. I actually just re-installed Update Manager (twice) and it is stuck at 60% on the first, initial Signiture Update.

Hello,

Does your VC have direct internet access or is it going over a proxy?

I had one upgrade where it enabled a proxy while the system was actually set to go directly out.

check C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\Update Manager\vci-integrity.xml and make sure you have this set.

<proxySettings>

<useProxyServer>false</useProxyServer> <!-- true -->

<proxyServer></proxyServer> <!-- proxy.vmware.com -->

<proxyPort></proxyPort> <!-- 3128 -->

</proxySettings>

OK, the update signiture now completed but when I go to Plugins | Plugin Manager and select to Download and Install VMWare Update Manager I get this POP-UP: The Remote Server returned an error: (501) Not Implimented

I am trying to re-install update manager and at Step 2 - VMware Update Port Settings SOAP: 8084 and Web Port: 9084, for Port 9084 I get this POP-UP; Invalid Web Port number or TCP\IP port is already in use. It must be in the 1 - 65535 range. Is this an issue if I change the Posrt # from 9084 to 9100?

OK, once I changed the Port number it did install and the update signiture is up to 40% now.....

Remote server?

Are you running multiple server e.g. VC and VUM separately.?

Maybe run netstat -b -a to see what ports are used by what processes.

I've seen a similar problem with the 501 error

being displayed in the logs. In this instance there was a firewall

between the Update Manager server and the Proxy. The proxy servers was listening on tcp/80 and required NTLM authentication.

The firewall was set to allow the traffic from the Update Manger to the proxy server, however the rule was setup as a "proxy the communication" rule rather than a plain old "packet filter" rule.

What happened, was the firewall rule would allow the initial communication through to the proxy, however when Update Manager was trying to request connections through the firewall, the firewall rule wouldn't allow it as it was detecting https traffic over what it thought was a http connection.

Changing the firewall rule to a packet fileter rule resolved the issue.

Hope this helps others troubleshoot this problem.
