Update Manager 5.1 / HP depot not working

Hi,

I want to add the HP Online depot as a download source to the Update Manager. The URL http://vibsdepot.hp.com/index.xml gets validated, but no HP updates get downloaded after hitting "apply" and "download now".

Am I missing something?

Kind regards

Do you maybe already have the HP extensions in your VUM patch repository?

What if you add the URL http://vibsdepot.hp.com/hpq/oct2012/index.xml instead?

Also, check the VUM logs in C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Update Manager\Logs\vmware-vum-server-log4cpp.log for any obvious errors.

I came across these different URLs while searching for a solution. What's definetly the right URL to use? One gerenal URL ore seperate URLs for each month's release?

Looking at the logs, I can't see any difference between both URLs...

I didn't have any HP updates/bundles in my repository before trying to add them that way. What I've done now as a quick workaround, is adding the latest hp bundle directly via zip-file.

Both URLs should work fine. The difference is that http://vibsdepot.hp.com/index.xml links to the repository http://vibsdepot.hp.com/hpq/hpq-index.xml, which contains all HP offline bundle versions released.

On the other hand http://vibsdepot.hp.com/hpq/oct2012/index.xml links to http://vibsdepot.hp.com/hpq/oct2012/hpq-index.xml, a repository containing only the latest offline bundle versions from october.

You can stick with the URL http://vibsdepot.hp.com/index.xml just fine now, it used to be different in the past though.

I am having similar issues. When I look at the Update Manager logs it is trying to access "http://vibsdepot.hp.com/hpq/feb2013". That is not what I have configured in VUM. This occurs if I point to http://vibsdepot.hp.com/index.xml or http://vibsdepot.hp.com/hpq/oct2012/index.xml.

The /feb2013 folder does not exist on their site, however, some of their packages make reference to it. It looks to be clearly an HP issue, the question is now, how do we get them to fix it.

That's stale metadata from packages HP published a few weeks ago but then pulled them offline a few days later.

See here (shameless self-plug):

That'll do it. Thanks, hopefully they will repost the updated data and clear it up soon.

HP released new firmware stuffs and also re-released the febuary ESXi bundles again:

http://vibsdepot.hp.com/hpq/feb2013/

It seems like Update Manager updated the metadata for the same bundles accordingly after checking for updates again, but I haven't tried actually patching a host yet.

Can't get the Update Manager to download the feb2013 release. I'm stuck with oct2012.

Another strange thing is: When I configure my Update Manager to download ESXi 5.1 Updates only, it won't doanload ANYTHING from the HP Vibs Depot. If I add ESXi 5.0 to the configuration, I get HP updates.

You can only select matching products/ESXi versions etc. with patch baselines.

The HP bundles are host extensions though and only effective when selected in host extension baselines. For some reason beyond me host extensions are listed in patch baselines too and can be selected, but they will never be applied during remediation.

You could try deleting the \hostupdate\HPQ folder contents or metadata packages on your UM server. However, this stale data in the UM DB. Try at your own risk or make a backup of the folder/snapshot the VM (and maybe UM DB) beforehand.

You could also just manually import the February offline bundles into UM. The next bundle release, should be ok again (unless HP is going to mess it up like this again).

You can specify the ESXi versions for the downloads by editing this configuration file before the first synchronizsation:

C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\Infrastructure\Update Manager\vci-integrity.xml

There's a part that looks like this:

<contentSettings>
    <hostInclude id="0001">esx-4.0.0-INTL</hostInclude>
    <hostInclude id="0002">embeddedEsx-4.0.0-INTL</hostInclude>
    <hostInclude id="0003">esx-4.1.0-INTL</hostInclude>
    <hostInclude id="0004">embeddedEsx-4.1.0-INTL</hostInclude>
    <hostInclude id="0005">embeddedEsx-5.0.0-INTL</hostInclude>
    <hostInclude id="0006">embeddedEsx-5.1.0-INTL</hostInclude>
    <hostUpdateEnabled>true</hostUpdateEnabled>
    <vaUpgradeEnabled>true</vaUpgradeEnabled>
</contentSettings>

I've changed it to that:

<contentSettings>
    <hostInclude id="0001">embeddedEsx-5.0.0-INTL</hostInclude>
    <hostInclude id="0002">embeddedEsx-5.1.0-INTL</hostInclude>
    <hostUpdateEnabled>true</hostUpdateEnabled>
    <vaUpgradeEnabled>true</vaUpgradeEnabled>
</contentSettings>

I already think of reinstalling the Update-Manager to get rid of ESX(i) 4.x Updates, that I dont need, since we're using 5.1. Maybe this will fix the HP Update issue, too. If not, I've at least got a cleaner repository 😃

WTF!?

My words exactly.

To add to the confusion, you're still presented with the updated bundles from the HP server software/drivers lists for ESXi:

http://www.hp.com/swpublishing/MTX-01441a612d354aba868f22f96a hp-esxi5.0uX-bundle-1.4-16.zip

And now the bundles are back at http://vibsdepot.hp.com/hpq/feb2013/

File dates are from Jan 4th and the bundles md5sums match the ones from the initial release mid-January exactly. So if there really was a bug with the release, it must still be there.

Let's see how long it'll take HP to offline them again, this is getting hilarious.

Does anyone know, why the latest apr2013 updates are not showing up in my Update Manager?

I've configured this URL http://vibsdepot.hp.com/index.xml but the latest Updates I get are from February.

Another question:

I've already versions 1.5 and 1.6 of the HP Complete Bundle Update in my repository. The April2013 updates are version 1.4.5-3. Why is this version smaller now?

It looks like HP has added the patches to the web site, but not updated the http://vibsdepot.hp.com/hpq/hpq-index.xml so you may need to import the patches manually into Update Manager.

I can't answer the question with the different version, but I agree that HPs versioning can be quite confusing.

I've configured this URL http://vibsdepot.hp.com/index.xml but the latest Updates I get are from February.

That is unfortunately normal, HP has not updated the referenced metadata for the April release yet to include it automatically:

http://vibsdepot.hp.com/hpq/hpq-index.xml

You can still upload the bundle manually in UM though.

Another question:

You are confusing 2 things here. First, there are the individual offline bundle packages (which may also be made up of multiple VIBs, like in this case), for example the HP CIM provider bundle, at the current version hp-esxi5.0uX-bundle-1.4.5-3.zip or the HP Utility bundle currently being hp-HPUtil-esxi5.0-bundle-1.4-15.zip.

The "Complete Bundle Update" is actually not a real downloadable single-file offline bundle like them, it's just a collection of multiple independent bundle files defined by the metadata provided on the vibsdepot.

The "Complete Bundle" includes all VIBs provided by the NMI sourcing, CIM providers and Utility bundles, that's why it's sufficient to apply a baseline with only this package in UM to a host. You can check the vmware.xml file in this metadata package with the list of VIBs:

http://vibsdepot.hp.com/hpq/feb2013/local-metadata-hp-esxi-bundles-5.0.0-1.6.zip

The "Complete Bundle" 1.6 includes:

hp-smx-provider 500.03.02.00.23-434156

However, the April offline bundle provides an ever so slightly different version:

hp-smx-provider 500.03.02.10.4-434156

For shameless plugging purposes:

With the release of ESXi 5.1 Update 1 HP also now provides a full repository release including the Utility Bundle and NMI driver: (which actually do not contain any updated VIBs)

http://vibsdepot.hp.com/hpq/apr2013/

But they still haven't updated the main metadata xml.

If you want these updates in UM automatically, you need to configure this additional Donwload Source URL:

http://vibsdepot.hp.com/hpq/apr2013/index.xml

To continue the confusing version management, the Complete Bundle is now at version "04.25.13".
