Unable to migrate windows 2008 to different data store

When i try to migrate machine to different data store i get the error

"error caused by file [ ] .vmdk

Hey Ramji,

Here are some things to check.

1. Does the VM have an active snapshot? If so, commit it and try again.

2. What is the block size on the target datastore? The VMDK may be too large for the block size.

1 there is no snapshots

2 the machine size is c: 80gb & d: 40 gb the block size is 1mb maximum file size is 256 gb for the data store .

OK,

So when you browse the datastore, are there any orphaned snapshots?

Also, are you able to migrate the VM to another datastore with a different block size, or do you get this error whichever datastore you choose?

Can you confirm that 40GB and 80GB are the VMDK sizes, and not just the Windows partition sizes?

1 this happens in all data store

2. 40 gb & 80gb are .vmdk files of the machine and not os partition size .

hello,

have you tried:

- to "cold migrate" it

- to vmotion it to another esx host and then to "storage migrate" it?

can you please post the vmware.log of the corresponding machine after a failed migration..

I switched off and tried still i was not able to migrate .the other 2 i am yet to try will it be of any use

hello,

first move that vm to another host and try storage migration. still you got the problem then shut the vm reboot the host and then try storage vmotion.

it should work. if the problem continous post the error log.
