Time it takes to complete a VCB

If I have a VM with total disk size of 200 GB, will the VCB take shorter time to backup if there isn't a lot of data on the disk? Or does it go by total size of the disk and not total data?

Thanks

Hello.

Total data, including data that has been deleted.  Check out http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2009/07/31/storage-vmotion-and-moving-to-a-thin-provisioned-disk/ for an explanation of how this will work, and how you can keep the sizes to a minimum.

Good Luck!

the whitespace is being removed and then only the used space is being backup. it's pretty fast if you're on FC 4Gbps, i'm getting like 1-3 GB per minute - of course the mileage varies.

for more info, please do refer to : http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_consolidated_backup.pdf

VCB has being depreciated in vSphere 4.1. It has being replaced by VMware vStorage APIs for Data Protection (VADP) @ http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1021175

Also do look into VMware Data Recovery it might come with your version. @ http://www.petri.co.il/vmware-data-recovery-backup-and-restore.htm
