Testing a VM restore via VCB

When a VM is restored via VCB, what is its default power state? On or Off?

I want to test my VCB restores but I worry about the restored VM causing a domain name or ip address conflict with my production VM running live on the network.

Also, I tried to restore the VM to a different Farm and the vcbRestore command failed, complaining that it couldn't find the farm for the VM. Is restoring across farms supported in VCB?

Your best bet is to use VMware Converter for the restore. Recover the VMDK and associated files to the VCB proxy local disk. Then use Converter to import the VM to the ESX host. This will give you a choice for the power state.

Thank you for that reply. That sounds great. We have converter ent ed and that's an easy tool to use. I'll try that.

This did not work:

vCB backup of vm succeeds

VCB retore of vm succeeds

Launch VMWare Converter

Click on the Import Machine button

VMware Converter Import Wizard Welcome screen displays-click next

Step 1: Choose a source for import

Click Next

Choices are physical, ESX Server or Virtual Center VM, or Standalone vm

Choose standalone vm

Source vm or image dialog box with browse button

Browse to folder where image was restored to on proxy

.vmx

click Next

Dialog Box appears: "Unable to determine Guest Operating System"
