Templates not compressing

Hi, I just have a simple test enviroment at the moment, 1 VC 3.5 U4 Foundation and 1 ESX 3.5 U4.

I've created some templates, but I notice that when I clone a VM to a new template and choose to compact the template, it still has the same size as the source VM.

So if I have a VM with 30 GB disk, the template is still using 30 GB even if I select to comact it in the wizard. Of course this wastes a lot of unnecessary space on my SAN.

Any clues of why this is happening?

Which command are you using?

du -sh *vmdk

or

ls -h *vmdk

The first give the real physical space used by a file.

Not sure I understand what you mean.

When I clone a VM to a template, I choose to store it on a VMFS on the SAN and choose "Compact volume", but when I log to the console and see the size of the vmdk, it shows the original size, in my case 30 GB instead of just a few GB that the VM is using.
