Some questions regarding update manager

Hey guys,

Not sure whether I am doing something wrong here but I seem to have some issues with update manager.

First of all my schedule task does not seem to run. I have configured to notify me with an email but nothing ended up in my mailbox

and the Update manager event log in VI was empty too. However, when I ran it manually it did sent me an email and downloaded the updates.

These were downloaded

The number of updates downloaded (critical/total): ESX: 5/9 ID: ESX350-200804401-BG Impact: Critical Release date: 2008-04-29 Products: esx 3.5.0 Update to VMware-esx-vmkernel ID: ESX350-200804402-BG Impact: Critical Release date: 2008-04-15 Products: esx 3.5.0 Update to VMware-esx-vmx ID: ESX350-200804403-BG Impact: Critical Release date: 2008-04-15 Products: esx 3.5.0 Update to VMware-hostd-esx ID: ESX350-200804404-BG Impact: NotApplicable Release date: 2008-04-15 Products: esx 3.5.0 Update to VMware-esx-drivers-scsi-vmkiscsi ID: ESX350-200804405-BG Impact: NotApplicable Release date: 2008-04-15 Products: esx 3.5.0 Update to VMware-esx-drivers-scsi-megaraid2 ID: ESX350-200804406-BG Impact: NotApplicable Release date: 2008-04-15 Products: esx 3.5.0 Update to VMware-esx-drivers-net-e1000 ID: ESX350-200804407-BG Impact: Critical Release date: 2008-04-15 Products: esx 3.5.0 Update to kernel-source and kernel-vmnix ID: ESX350-200804408-BG Impact: NotApplicable Release date: 2008-04-15 Products: esx 3.5.0 Update to VMware-esx-scripts ID: ESXe350-200804401-I-BG Impact: Critical Release date: 2008-04-15 Products: embeddedEsx 3.5.0 Firmware update

I think there is also an issue with the baseline scanning or maybe I don't understand it corectly. When I check critical host updates under baselines

I see some of the newly downloaded patches.

When I check the update manager tab of my host and scan for updates I don't seem to get an indication that there are new updates.

I make use of two baselines, critical host and non critical host updates (default ones),

The summary says I have 2 baselines and 24 compliant updates and no non-compliant updates. However my baselines show me this:

-Critical updates: Status compliant / 9 Compliant updates / 0 non-compliant updates

-Non critical updates: Status compliant / 18 compliant updates / 0 non-compliant updates

Something seems wrong here. I have critical updates and I don't think they are picked up. And why says one setting that I have 24 compliant updates and the other 9+18? BTW, that is exactly the amount of updates I have installed. It is my understanding that non-compliant updates are the available updates waiting to be installed.

Also, when I run remediate and I select my baselines it does not pick up any updates.

One more issue, in VI, I have the update signature task sitting at 50% for well over an hour now.

Any ideas?

This may seem a bit tedious, but compare the actual update numbers, both in the baseline definition, as well as inside of the attached baseline for the server you are scanning. Check to see if there is a difference, or if the missing updates just don't apply.
