Shares and Resource Pools

We are running ESX server V 3.0.2 and virtual centre 2.0.2. I have a question regarding shares and resource pools. I have been reading the resource mgt guide and there is section on removing virtual machines from resource pools which says that when you remove a VM from a resource pool, the total number of shares associated with the resource pool decreases, so that each remaining share represents more resources. From my understanding was when a resource pool has an allocation of shares and when a VM is removed from a resource pool there are more shares available for other VM's not less shares.

Is the book correct and is my understanding incorrect.
