Renaming .vmdk files

I have a VM with .vmdk files spread accross 3 LUNs. All the .vmdk files were created with the same name. The problem is when trying to create a snapshot, or backup using esXpress, it complains that it cannot create the snapshot because the .vmdk files have the same name.

Ok, so I used vmkfstools -E to rename one of the .vmdk files, it worked, ls -l shows the new file name, but in VIC, 'edit settings' shows the old .vmdk file name.

The VM remained operational, it has not crashed and all the drives are accessible.

I have a feeling that when the VM reboots it will present me with an error stating it cannot find the .vmdk file I renamed.

Do I have to edit the .vmx file? Did I miss a step durring vmkfstools -E?

Any advice is appreciated.

Yes once you powerdown the VM and try to start it will complain it can not find the disk. The easiest way is to remove the disk from the VM, then rename and add back to the VM
