Remote Clone of Server impossibly slow!

Dear All

I have a very simple setup, 2 offices use VMware so we have a host at each with DAS. SiteA has the Vcenter Server installed. When we migrated physical machines at SiteB to virtual machines, everything was nice and quick, but when we attempted to clone machines at SiteB it appears to transmit huge amounts of data down the wire back to the Vcenter Server? We only have an ADSL link between offices, so after about 10 hours and 4GB of data transmitted we had to abandon ship Smiley Wink

So my question is, what happens when we clone a machine? What does everyone else do when managing remote sites? How can I clone a machine at SiteB in a reasonable amount of time?

Thanks in advance

Stuart

Hi Stuart,

You can use a direct copy from site B to site B using command line tools or Veeam FastSCP for example. The only drawback is that you need to register the copy of your VM you made manually to the vCenter, as it is not aware of the operation.

You can have a look at the following articles for more details:

- Moving or copying a virtual machine within a VMware environment

- Moving or Copying Virtual Disks in a VMware Environment

Good luck.

Regards

Franck
