Relationship between Virtual Center 2.x and MSDE2000

Hey

Can anyone tell me how the Virtual Center authenticates to the MSDE or SQL.

And can you change these credentials besides just the password?

It is not well descriped anywhere.

it uses an ODBC Connection that you will create on the VCMS box prior to or during installation.

So if i want to change the user and password which it should use, i should just do it by changing the info on the ODBC Source?

As far as I know, the username and password is not stored in ODBC.

So what credentials does it use, and how do you change these?

Best regards

Once you setup the ODBC connection, you run VC setup. In this setup you give it a SQL-authentication password. This password can be changed by connecting to your VC server with the VI Client and going to the Administration menu, selecting VirtualCenter Management Server Configuration, and then choose the Database option. Changing the password here requires a manual restart of the VirtualCenter.

Any other information you want to change (the ODBC System DSN name, the user account name) requires a reinstall of the VirtualCenter application.

Okay thanks. But is there no other way of change the credentials?

Of course a reinstallation is no big deal, but still.

If you feel adventurous, check out the registry location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VMware, Inc.\VMware VirtualCenter\DB

and look there, you may be able to stop the service, change these registry keys, and start it back up. But I would just recommend reinstalling VC and keeping your database.
