Hi,
I have 2 esx hosts, running virtualcenter I have the virtual center server installed on a VM located on esx 2.
I'm wondering if this is best practice for HA/Vmotion to work?
If my esx 2 host fails, how will it know to automatically move the VM over to esx host 1? Doesn't the virtual center management server take care of this process? Going by the best practices for Virtualcenter it says Management server should be setup/installed on a seperate server to the esx hosts.
thanks in advance
VirtualCenter is just required to setup and configure HA. Once you have that done, the ESX host manage the process on their own, thus you can have your VC server in a VM that is part of an HA cluster. See page 5 / 6 for what you can and can not do when VC is in a VM - http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_vc_in_vm.pdf.

yup, don't worry mate - once HA is set up using VC, all the communication is peer-to-peer between the HA agents in the service consoles of the hosts. VC not required to run it...
ok cheers
