Proxy VCB corrupt NTFS RDM

Hello everybody,

In our company we've a Cluster managed by Virtual Center 2.5, with 6 ESXs (DELL Poweredge 2950) with 32 gb of memory per server. All of them are connected in a SAN switched network to a CX3-40.

In order to backup our infrastructure, we implemented Netbackup 6.5.2a (windows 2003) with VCB 1.1. This host in in the same Clariion host group toghether with the ESX hosts (for allowing to access all vmfs and rdm disks).

I don't know why, but this server (it's physical), try to run chkdsk on RDM disks every time start up. Is there some way to avoid it to use them while the vms (with rdm) operate normally, and allowing to access them only when we need to backup?

Thanks in advance

scrub:

Removes volume mount point directories and registry settings for volumes that are no longer in the system. This prevents volumes that were previously in the system from being automatically mounted and given their former volume mount point(s) when they are added back to the system.

Riccardo -

You need to run diskapart on the VCB and then execute "automount disable" and then "automount scrub". this wil help a little, but it MUST be done. This is outlined in the VM Backup Guide. Also, you may noy need to run chkdsk from the VM that "owns" the RDM to correct any corruption.

If you are going to VMworld, check out my breakout session: BC2497 VMware Consolidated Backup - Report from the Trenches. I will be disussing VCB and NBU.

Hi dconvery,

thank you a lot for your help. I know automount disable option, but what about scrub? What's the meaning?

I'm trying to convince my boss to let me subscribe to the vmworld, but you know, it's so expensive.

Hi,

I've done everything you said but the problem seems to continue. Should I remove every drive letters that vcb proxy assigned to ntfs drives that it see?

Yes. I would disconnect the SAN and run automount scrub again. then shut down, connect SAN and restart. That should clear it. They will need to be dicsonnected to benefit from the scrub command.
