Forgive the redundancy, I've seen posts that are close to answering my question but not close enough. I'm looking to purchase a new Dell PowerEdge server to join to an existing Dell PowerEdge server at a client site in order to VMotion between the two. The environment is (or will be) ESX 3.0.1 and VC 2.0.1.
My question is specifically with CPU compatibility. The existing server is a PE 2950 with Intel Xeon 5060 series 3.2GHz processors (dual). I'd like to couple it with a new PowerEdge 2950 with higher series processors (5100 series or a 6850 running 7000 or 7100 series Xeons). How picky is VMotion with regards to the processor series? I've read the posts on SSE3 and SSE4 but I need to better understand how to correlate that with the processor series.
