Path from vCenter Server for Windows 6.5 to vCenter Server Appliance 6.5

Is there a migration path from vCenter Server 6.5 to vCenter Server Appliance 6.5?

Or at least a way to migrate the settings from one to the other.

Thanks!

We do the migration always when doing a step forward. IIRC its not possible when you would like to the same exact version of vCenter.

Notes:

  1. A vCenter can manage ESXi which are on the same or two version below
  2. The lic keys stays the same within the complete 6.x version
  3. VUM wasnt part of the VCSA on the beginning.  IIRC VCSA 6.5 contains VUM

That might be a sticking point for us. We moved the whole environment (ESXi hosts and vCenter) to v6.5. And now we want to move to VCSA because it does have VUM, as the SQL version on the current VUM deployment on VCS on Windows is SQL 2014.

Plus I know that VMWare is "encouraging" as it were, the move the VCSA.

Might you know about any way to export the vCenter settings to make the 6.5-to-6.5 transition easier? If I have to redo the entire configuration I will.

Thanks again!

As mentioned by Joerg, a migration is only supported by going to a higher version, and I'm currently not aware of a workaround.

Please don't mind me asking, but why don't you simply migrate your vCenter Server to e.g. version 6.7?

Not a problem to ask. In fact, I'm thinking that I might have to do that.
